The TENS Difference
The most critical aspect of treating TMD is finding the right treatment bite.  Traditional dentistry as taught by most dental schools and The Pankey Institute involves jaw manipulation.  In this procedure the doctor physically manipulates the patients jaw to a position where the two heads (condyles) of the lower jaw fit into a space in the skull (fossa).  The justification for this is that it is a repeatable position.  This position ignores the pathway in which the muscles would guide the lower jaw to when relaxed and in a healthy state.

The TENS or Transcutaneous Electrical Neural Stimulation delivers a gentle electrical stimulation to the chewing muscles to help to get them to a relaxed state.  The electrical stimulation is delivered through adhesive electrodes attached to the skin over muscle sites. This gentle stimulation is delivered 40 times per minute for about 45 minutes.  Tense muscles have a restricted blood flow.  The TENS "exercises" these muscles to establish good blood flow, which brings oxygen and nutrients to the muscles and flushes away waste from metabolism.

When monitored by our computerized jaw tracking, Dr. Hedge can see the "pathway" the muscles want to go in, by the direction of the pulse.  This is where he allows the muscles to find the comfortable bite.

Many orthotics or splints may look alike, but the can have very different outcomes based on how the bite was taken.
